For many, giving a TED Talk is something for the bucket list.
A career pinnacle that only a select few ever come close to achieving.
Subject matter experts sharing their wisdom and expertise.
The thing is: delivering a high-level TED Talk is a skill.
Rather than an innate talent that few are born with, it’s something you can learn.
It’s a skill we’ve trained dozens of people in around the world.
In the last twelve months, we’ve run this course from Riyadh to Raleigh.
Let’s get into how it works.

1. Understand the science
Every successful TED Talk has a lot in common.
A confident speaker.
A story-filled opening.
Often, a complex topic made simple, broken down into stages.
It can seem daunting to take all of that on and make it yours.
We’ll show you how.
We start with dealing with the jargon for the audience.
Next, it’s figuring out the structure with a simple tool borrowed from journalism.
We’ll then discuss strong, positive language.
If you can follow these simple steps, you’ll be on the right track with your content.

2. Learn the craft
But what about the delivery?
This is what separates a good TED Talk from a great one.
A speaker who owns the stage.
Every word is deliberately chosen. Some hang in the air for effect.
How do you learn this?
We’ll show you how.
Similarly, to designing the content, we’ll break it down into a series of tick boxes.
We’ll start with your stance.
Next, it’s onto using your hands.
We’ll discuss eye contact with a big audience.
Tone of voice and pausing wrap up this section of our course.
It’ll take more than a day’s training to nail, but now you know what you’re looking for.

3. Perfect the skill
Our training is designed to give you theory and practice in equal measure.
Once we’ve taken you through the rules for content and delivery, it’s over to you.
We’ll give you time to prepare a TED Talk of your own, even just the opening few minutes.
After some practice, we’ll invite you to take to our stage and deliver your talk on camera.
Once you’ve finished, we’ll watch back the recording.
Why?
Because how you think it went in your head is completely different to what the audience saw.
We’ll identify strengths and areas for improvement.
You’ll have some more preparation time before we ask you to deliver the talk for a second time.
From our experience of running these courses since 1989, this round is significantly stronger.
Now it’s over to you to tweak, shape, and perfect the rest.
